Sunrise Valley Elementary School is on Cross School Road in southeast Reston, in the South Lakes High pyramid. Of the roughly 24,200 addresses inside Reston’s Census boundary in Fairfax County’s address file, about 13% fall in its zone on the county’s 2026-27 attendance maps, and by land area it is the largest elementary zone feeding Hughes Middle. The school was established in September 1978 with classes at South Lakes High while its building was finished; the new building opened Sept. 4, 1979, according to its history page. A three-year renovation was completed in 2016 at a cost of $14.4 million.

Attendance zone

The school’s history page says Sunrise Valley was the first Gifted and Talented center in the Reston area, the forerunner of today’s Advanced Academic Programs.
